The Honest Limitations
£480 is serious money for what’s essentially a content creation tool. Add the Media Mod (£80), Light Mod (£50), and Rode Wireless GO (£200), and you’re looking at around £810 for the complete setup. It’s professional-grade kit, but the price reflects that.
Audio quality without the Rode system is still mediocre. The Media Mod’s built-in microphone is better than the camera’s internal mic, but it’s not great. For proper audio, you really need an external solution like the Rode Wireless GO, which adds cost but transforms the audio quality completely.
Menu system can be fiddling in cold conditions. The touchscreen works, but making setting adjustments whilst wearing gloves requires patience. The voice commands help, but they’re not always reliable in windy conditions on the fells.

The extra GoPro batteries live in the same pocket as other small electronics, and the whole system integrates well with my existing kit. After eighteen months of regular use in proper English outdoor conditions – Lake District rain, Yorkshire Dales wind, and Peak District snow – the GoPro Hero 12 Black has proved one of my most valuable content creation investments.
